- Compare feeds on a dry matter (DM) basis — fresh grass may be around 80% water, dry feed around 10–15%.
- A rough rule for grazing animals is 2–3% of bodyweight in dry matter per day, more for lactating animals.
- Make any change of diet gradually over a week or more.
- Always match the feed to the species and stage of life, and read the label — some feeds are unsafe for other species.
- Provide clean water at all times, and minerals suited to the animal and the forage.
