Livestock Movements & Records — The Basics

Last updated 21 Sep 2026

The details differ by species and by nation, and they change — always check the current official guidance before you buy, sell or move animals. The general principles are:

  • Register your holding and follow the identification and tagging rules for your species.
  • Keep up-to-date records of animals on and off the holding, and of medicines used.
  • Movements are usually reportable within set time limits and some need a licence or standstill.
  • Keep the paperwork — inspections are far easier when it is in order.
