Rough Daily Water Needs

Last updated 21 Sep 2026

Needs rise sharply in hot weather and for animals in milk. As a very rough guide per head per day:

  • Cattle — commonly 40–100 litres, more for high-yielding dairy cows.
  • Horses — around 25–50 litres.
  • Sheep and goats — around 4–10 litres.
  • Pigs — around 5–10 litres.
  • Chickens — around a quarter to half a litre.

Size troughs by how many animals need to drink at once and check the supply in frosty weather.
