Successful arable farming is about more than achieving high yields. Growing cereals, oilseeds and pulses profitably requires careful crop rotation, healthy soils, sensible input costs and getting machinery timing right.

One of the biggest mistakes farmers make is chasing higher yields without calculating whether the additional expenditure is worthwhile. A smaller harvest with lower production costs can sometimes deliver greater profits.

Three things every arable farmer should prioritise:

Soil health: Protect soil structure, maintain fertility and avoid unnecessary compaction.

Crop rotation: Use a balanced rotation to manage weeds, pests, diseases and input costs.

Machinery and timing: Drill, spray and harvest when conditions are suitable rather than rushing operations.

The important question: Are you producing more tonnes, or making more profit from every hectare?

Up for a discussion? What has made the biggest difference to your arable farm's profitability: crop rotation, fertiliser savings, machinery efficiency or better grain prices?
